Permit Test Study Guide

Last updated:

You do not need to study for weeks to pass your permit test, you need to study the right things in the right order. This guide gives you a straightforward plan, then points you to in-depth articles for each step. Follow it, and walking into the DMV will feel a lot less intimidating.

The five-step study plan

  1. Read your state handbook once. Get the full picture before you drill details. Every official test question comes from this book.
  2. Master road signs. Signs are high-yield and easy points. Learn the shapes and colors first.
  3. Practice by topic. Work through right-of-way, speed and following distance, parking, and alcohol-and-drug rules until each feels comfortable.
  4. Take full practice tests. Use Practice Mode to learn, then Exam Mode to simulate the real thing under a timer.
  5. Review your weak areas. After each test, study the categories dragging your score down, then test again. Repeat until you are comfortably above the passing line.
