How CDL testing works

Getting a Commercial Driver License starts with the written knowledge tests, then a skills test in the vehicle you intend to drive. Everyone passes the General Knowledge test first. From there, the endorsements you add depend on what and whom you will haul: combination vehicles and air brakes for most tractor-trailers, passenger and school bus for buses, HazMat for placarded loads, and tanker or doubles/triples for those specific rigs. Because the knowledge tests come from the federal Commercial Driver License Manual, what you study here applies in every state, with only minor local differences in fees and scheduling.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the General Knowledge test and work in practice mode, where every answer comes with an explanation. Once you are scoring above the pass mark, switch to the exam simulator to rehearse under the real test length and time. After each attempt, the topic breakdown shows which areas to review, and your progress saves automatically so you can pick up where you left off.

CDL practice test FAQ

What is on the CDL test?

Every CDL applicant takes the General Knowledge test. Depending on the vehicle and job, you may also take endorsement tests: air brakes, combination vehicles, HazMat, passenger, school bus, tanker, and doubles/triples, plus a pre-trip inspection and skills test.

Are CDL tests the same in every state?

The knowledge content is federal, drawn from the AAMVA/FMCSA model Commercial Driver License Manual, so it is nearly identical across states. Fees, scheduling, and a few rules vary, so confirm details with your state CDL manual.

Which CDL endorsements do I need?

It depends on what you will drive. Tractor-trailer drivers need combination vehicles and usually air brakes; bus drivers need passenger (and school bus for school buses); HazMat is for placarded loads; tanker and doubles/triples are for those specific vehicles.

Is this CDL practice really free?

Yes, completely free with no account required. Your scores and weak areas save privately in your browser so you can track progress across sessions.
