About the CDL Passenger (P) test

The CDL Passenger (P) endorsement lets you drive vehicles designed to carry a set number of riders, such as buses, shuttles, and motorcoaches. The test covers safely loading and unloading passengers, inspecting the bus, handling emergencies, and the special stopping rules at railroad crossings and drawbridges. The content comes from Section 4 of the federal Commercial Driver License Manual, so it applies in every state.

What the Passenger (P) test covers

  • Bus inspection: secure seats, working emergency exits and roof hatches, signaling devices, mirrors, handrails, steps, and required emergency equipment.
  • Loading and trip start: keeping aisles and the front door clear, securing baggage, and the strict limits on hazardous materials aboard a bus.
  • On the road: the standee line (no rider may stand forward of it), avoiding distracting conversation, and smooth speed and braking to protect riders.
  • Prohibited practices: fueling with riders aboard, refueling in an enclosed building, and towing or pushing a disabled bus with passengers.
  • Railroad crossings, drawbridges, emergencies, evacuation, and the post-trip walk-through for sleeping riders and left-behind items.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most-missed questions are the exact crossing distances and the standee-line rule. You must stop a bus 15 to 50 feet before the nearest rail at a railroad crossing and not change gears while crossing, and you must stop at least 50 feet before a drawbridge when there is no signal or attendant. No rider may ever stand forward of the standee line. Many also forget that you should not refuel a bus with passengers aboard unless it is unavoidable, and never inside an enclosed building.

How to study for it

Memorize the crossing distances (15 to 50 feet for railroads, at least 50 feet for drawbridges) and the standee-line and prohibited-practice rules, since several questions test them directly. Run the full practice test until those are automatic, then the exam simulator. The Passenger endorsement is also the prerequisite for the School Bus endorsement, so it is the natural next step toward driving a school bus.

CDL Passenger (P) test FAQ

How many questions are on the CDL Passenger test?

Most states use about a 20-question Passenger endorsement test with an 80% pass mark. Our practice and exam-simulator modes use the same length so you rehearse the real format.

How far must a bus stop before a railroad crossing?

You must stop between 15 and 50 feet before the nearest rail, then look and listen for a train before crossing. Do not change gears while crossing, so the bus cannot stall on the tracks.

What is the standee line on a bus?

It is a line on the floor marking how far forward standing riders may come. No passenger may stand forward of the standee line (the rear of the driver’s seat), because standing there can block the driver.

Do I need the Passenger endorsement for a school bus?

Yes. The School Bus (S) endorsement requires the Passenger (P) endorsement first, so most school bus drivers pass the Passenger test before adding School Bus.
